TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines who hang together socially and professionally during the term, and beyond. We hold weekly ProD sessions for students which include different activities such as conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and active listening. The Cybersecurity Co-op Analyst will support TRIUMF’s cybersecurity operations team in protecting the organization’s digital assets, systems, and research data. The position provides hands-on experience with cybersecurity tools and processes, while also contributing to automation initiatives, threat detection, and incident response in a national research environment.
Monitor and triage security alerts from Microsoft Sentinel, Defender for Endpoint (MDE), Intune, and FortiSIEM.
Assist with phishing investigation and response, as well as endpoint alert triage and documentation.
Participate in vulnerability scanning and assist with remediation tracking.
Develop and maintain automation scripts (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash) to support log analysis, alert triage, data enrichment, or other SOC workflows.
Contribute to improving and documenting detection rules and response playbooks.
Support the creation of cybersecurity awareness materials and help execute internal phishing simulation campaigns.
Analyze logs and system behaviors to identify potential threats or misconfigurations.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams on secure configurations, patching, and security best practices.
Required:
Enrolment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field.
Strong interest in cybersecurity and automation.
Solid understanding of networking fundamentals and operating systems (Windows and Linux).
Familiarity with Python, PowerShell, or Bash scripting for automation tasks.
Clear communication skills, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
Preferred:
Hands-on experience building small-scale automation or monitoring tools.
Exposure to SIEM/EDR solutions (e.g., Sentinel, Splunk, MDE).
Knowledge of vulnerability management, phishing analysis, or incident response processes.
Awareness of frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK or NIST CSF.
ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity(CC), CompTIA Security+ or similar certification(s).
By the end of the co-op term, the student will:
Gain experience with cybersecurity tools and incident response workflows.
Develop and deploy automation scripts to support security operations and to reduce attack surface.
Understand vulnerability scanning methodologies and mitigation strategies.
Learn how to interpret and respond to phishing attacks, endpoint threats, and anomalous user behavior.
Contribute to TRIUMF’s security documentation, awareness campaigns, and compliance posture.
Build foundational knowledge in cybersecurity governance, threat intelligence, and operational security in a research setting.
