TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines who hang together socially and professionally during the term, and beyond. Our program offers young minds a chance to gather, learn, make new friends, and have fun doing so during their time at TRIUMF. We hold weekly ProD sessions for students which include different activities such as conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and active listening. Additionally, we hold weekly seminars about the different experiments at TRIUMF, and these talks specifically cater to students. Located on the UBC campus makes it easier for students to make friends, create memories, and explore Vancouver all while working at TRIUMF.

TRIUMF’s student program is more than just a place to work, its learning, memories, friendships, exploration, and development all clubbed into one.

Come join us to see how we are working to unlock the mysteries of the universe and shape the future. Apply now and be part of our extraordinary journey.

**This is an 8-month position**

Introduction:
The neutron lifetime gives access to fundamental parameters of the weak interaction. Therefore, a better knowledge provides direct tests of the standard model of particle physics. Moreover, a precise knowledge of the neutron lifetime is important for astrophysical models, such as the Big Bang theory or solar models. Several experiments worldwide measured the neutron lifetime during the past decades using the beam method, where decay protons are detected, and bottle method, where surviving neutron are counted. Combined, all the experiments show an average neutron lifetime of 878.6 ± 0.6 s. Although results accuracy improved with time, a clear several seconds discrepancy between the two methods emerged. This anomaly constitutes one of the most challenging mysteries of modern physics. The PENeLOPE experiment propose to solve this anomaly with a unique design and operating mode where decay protons are continuously detected, and surviving neutrons are counted at the end of a cycle. The experiment will be fed by ultracold neutrons from the TUCAN source currently being constructed at TRIUMF.

Basic function:
The student will assist with the design and installation of the experiment's connections to the helium liquefier and helium ballon. They will develop and test the slow control systems using LabView and TwinCAT. Additionally, they will support cooldown, quench training and perform data analysis.

Responsibilities:
Possible duty includes Implementing and utilizing slow control systems using a modern PLC architecture (Beckhoff). Modelling with SolidWorks, installing cryogenic fluid filling and gas recovery systems. Assist the cryogenic cooldown of the superconducting magnet and conduct data collection during quench training and preliminary analysis. A comprehensive report detailing the work completed and results achieved will be required at the conclusion of the position.

Qualifications:
>2nd year of physics, engineering physics or mechatronics. 8-month availability preferred.

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:

The incumbent will be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

Skills required:

Data Analysis, Research Data Collection, SolidWorks
