The RN on Mayo 15 provides care for pediatric and adult patients.  In this diverse practice, RNs will function in both a care team setting and a procedural testing area with a primary and secondary focus, allowing for cross-coverage.

In the allergy lab setting, RNs will provide direct care for adult and pediatric patients.  This environment is fast-paced, highly unpredictable, and requires extreme attention to detail.  RNs will be performing skin tests; spirometry testing; allergen challenges; mixing, micro-measurement, and administration of medications; and responding to patient reactions as necessary.  The Allergy Lab RN is required to have expert clinical assessment skills, exemplary attention to detail, and the ability to function autonomously in a largely protocol-driven setting.

In the allergy clinic care team, RNs are responsible for in-clinic patient education visits on a wide range of topics, including asthma action plan management, environmental allergen control measures, medication management, etc.  Additionally, RNs are responsible for the indirect care and management of patients over the phone and thru the electronic medical record portal.  In this capacity, RNs will provide, medication management, follow-up care, outcome management, and phone triage of patient inquiries. Demonstrated teamwork and relationship building skills are important as RNs collaborate with providers, desk operations staff, and other members of the care team. This role requires expert critical thinking, time management, multi-tasking and the ability to function autonomously in an unpredictable environment.  The ability to comfortably manage multiple computer applications is essential.

The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.
