TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines who hang together socially and professionally during the term, and beyond. We hold weekly ProD sessions for students which include different activities such as conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and active listening. Additionally, we hold weekly seminars about the different experiments at TRIUMF, and these talks specifically cater to students. Overview:
TRIUMF Life Sciences Division maintains a strong medical isotope and radiopharmaceutical production and development capability enabled by the unique infra structures including four cyclotrons and deep expertise. The program supports local and international users conducting high-impact research including the production of novel clinically relevant isotopes, radiopharmaceutical development for cancer diagnoses and treatment, imaging of neurodegeneration diseases and cutting-edge new technologies in nuclear medicine. One of our major research efforts is to develop and test novel chelates to harness the powerful radionuclides for cancer diagnose and treatment, i.e. targeted radionuclide therapy. The chelates under development in our labs have been successfully used to chelate next generation therapeutical isotopes including Ac-225, Tb-161, Lu-177 and others. When conjugated with targeting vector, the radiopharmaceuticals demonstrated tumour specific accumulation and treatment efficacy in several preclinical studies. With the recent surge of global interests in targeted radionuclide therapy and novel medical isotopes, trainees from this program will be well-positioned in this field where highly qualified personnel are in high demand.
Duties:
The successful candidate will join the effort of developing the next generation radiopharmaceuticals for targeted radionuclide therapy. They will take part in the organic synthesis and characterization, isotope production and purification, and also participate in the in vitro and in vivo evaluations.
Skills learned during this work experience:
Hands-on knowledge and experience with organic synthesis, analysis, radioisotope production, characterization, and radiopharmaceutical preparation will be learned. Basic knowledge in radiopharmaceutical sciences and radiotracer development will be acquired. Documentation and presentation skills will be practised.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will be a chemistry student with lab experience and a good work ethic. Experience with organic synthesis and characterization (NMR, MS), and other analytical methods (HPLC, UV) will be considered an asset.
NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:
The incumbent will be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.
